Susanne Bürner 29.06.2020 – 17.07.2020 |
During her time in Bordeaux, Susanne Bürner had a lot of interests
in Mériadeck a 1970s housing estate built on two levels in a
Bordeaux neighborhood. The cross-shaped high-rises are set in a
fully pedestrianized district that overlooks street level. With traffic
kept at ground level, the estate includes amenities such as an
underground tennis court, bowling alleys, an ice-skating rink, a
library, offices, a shopping mall, and fountains. Its geometrically
designed façades, characteristically made from cast concrete, are
reminiscent of a late version of Jacques Tati’s futuristic domestic
scenarios.
The photographs of the high-rise buildings, their façades and details
were printed on separate pieces of fabric and then re-composed
and re-photographed. The resulting focus on flat surfaces alludes to
a life referenced in the reflections on windowpanes and in the
people seen moving between the buildings. The various qualities of
the fabric mix with the images printed on them—these details
require close viewing.
Susanne Bürner is an artist based in Berlin. Through a broad spectrum of subject matter, she explores the psychological dimensions of images, directing viewers' attention to issues of presence and absence including her personal projection. Architecture plays an essential role in his work, as a human attempt to structure space and society, and to methodically arrange our lives. His work has been exhibited at Los Angeles Filmforum, CAPC Bordeaux, Hamburger Bahnhof Berlin, Hygiene Museum Dresden, Kunstraum Kreuzberg, South London Gallery, Fotomuseum Winterthur. She has organized exhibitions and screenings at Galerie Giti Nourbakhsch Berlin, L40 Berlin, Videonale Bonn and Lajevardi Foundation Tehran. https://susannebürner.de https://www.lafriche.org/evenements/mimicryempathy/ |
